| Foster homes
are the backbone of any and all Rescue Organizations.
We may provide the food, medicines and veterinary
care, but these are the people that open their homes, their hearts, and
give countless hours to rehabilitate, train and love the Dobermans that
sometimes have been dealt the worst life has to offer. No one can put a price on the compassion and dedication that is shown by the Foster Homes. These people are faced with dogs that may have been abused physically and/or mentally. To "deal" with an animal that has been abused, one has to show compassion, patience and give a lot of time to that dog so that it may recuperate. It is amazing to see the will to live and trust these animals regain once they have experienced the LOVE of a Foster home, the place where "safe" becomes part of their world again before being adopted. The Foster Home sometimes also faced with destructive dogs. These are often either strays or owner-turn-in's (OTI) that have not been taught the word NO. You will usually see these dogs in OBEDIENCE classes (although, ALL Dobermans should go to an obedience class.) Patience, many corrections, and just plain determination not to give up on these dogs (and believe me, this is easier said than done), can lead to a lot of success stories. Sometimes looking at these dogs as children looking for guidance, can help the Foster Home get through. Then once in awhile you get some that are a total joy to have, and wonder why someone would turn them in, or throw them out like yesterday's paper.
And finally the Foster Home faces the Dobes that are sick, and although we have tried all treatments, they cannot be helped. Some examples are those that develop cancer or liver problems. These are the ones that make you wonder, "If only I would have gotten to them sooner, or maybe I should have tried this other treatment." Whatever you are thinking, your heart is being torn, no matter how long these dogs have been with the home, when they have to be put to sleep. Of course, there are many that can be helped, and these make the Foster Home feel as though they are something special to accomplish this. To a Rescue Organization, you are. You are the unsung heroes, those that allow Rescue to continue their work, and try and help just one more dog. On behalf of all dogs, since we started in 1975 (we incorporated in (1977), I want to thank each and every Foster Home that opened their homes, hearts and allowed a dog to live and be given a second chance.
